Andy's Culinary Creation: Omelet Strudel

It's a little strange to make my first food post about a meal that I didn't even make, but forgive me. I had my camera ready and it's definitely something worth sharing.

I bought a roll of crescent dough on a whim the last time I went grocery shopping alone. It's not something I usually buy, but we've all made those spontaneous purchases when we make the mistake of shopping while hungry.

Andy spotted it in the fridge and became inspired. For breakfast that Saturday, I was treated to what he called a "Crescent-Wrapped Cheese Omelet."

The deliciousness looked like this:

Of course, Andy couldn't rest knowing that he could have made this meal a bit better. He brainstormed, and the next time he went grocery shopping he picked up a few extra goodies so he could try again, this time the "right" way.

It started with this, a little diced onion, sliced mushrooms, and Jimmy Dean's breakfast sausage:

Then came the chopped tomatoes and green peppers.

I grated some cheese with my food processor (which I highly recommend, for anyone who doesn't have one yet!), and Andy used that and the veggie/ sausage mixture to make omelets

(and of course, I snuck the puppy a bit of cheese, as well)

This is the unusual part, and where the "strudel" part comes in. We laid out the pre-made dough, put the omelets on top, and wrapped up. We made an extra one for a friend, so we didn't have quite enough dough and the wrapping didn't look quite as good as last time. We put them on parchment paper, my new discovery, to eliminate a greasy, crusty pan.

After popping it in the oven for 10 minutes, they came out looking like this:

And this is what it looked like around the time that I was full and should have stopped eating:

So there you have it, omelet strudel.

It's versatile, so I suppose you could make it any way you want. I suppose if I had done it, I would have skipped the onion and pepper (in my opinion, these are not breakfast food!), and maybe substituted ham for the sausage. Or maybe not, because this was pretty tasty.

Here's what Andy used (or at least, what he would use if he were making this for 4 people, instead of 2 or 3:
4 oz sliced mushrooms
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1/2 onion, chopped
1/2 tomato, chopped
1/2 tube Jimmy Dean's breakfast sausage
8 eggs
4 oz cheese, shredded (i.e. cheddar, monterey jack)
2 rolls seamless crescent dough

If you give it a shot, let me know how it goes.

P.S. Sorry about inconsistent sizing of pictures. I was fighting with photobucket and will win next time.

  1. Looks yummy! It's so cute that your husband likes to experiment in the kitchen. My husband makes frech toast. That's it. Just french toast :-)

  2. That looks awesome, Jolie Bolie! I think I would substitute bacon for the sausage & forgo the mushrooms because, as it goes, to each their own! :]
